Massive Crowd, Last-Minute Changes Blamed for Chinnaswamy Stadium Tragedy
What began as a celebration of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s historic IPL 2025 victory ended in tragedy on Wednesday, as a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru claimed the lives of 11 people and injured 47 others. Authorities have blamed poor planning, misinformation, and the lack of crowd control for the disaster.
Chaotic Celebrations Spiral Out of Control
Celebrations had already begun across the city on Tuesday night after RCB secured their maiden title in the IPL’s 18-year history. The team’s management had announced a victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium, followed by an in-stadium felicitation ceremony with limited free passes.
However, at 11:56 am on Wednesday, Bengaluru traffic police cancelled the parade, a decision that seemingly didn’t reach the thousands of fans who had already gathered around Vidhana Soudha and the stadium.
Tragedy Unfolds at Gate 3
By 3 pm, an estimated 50,000 people had gathered within a 1-km radius of the stadium. The situation worsened when Gate 3 of the stadium partially opened around 4 pm. Both ticket-holders and non-ticketed fans surged forward, hoping to catch a glimpse of the players. In the resulting chaos, several people fell and were trampled.
Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene. “There was nobody to control the crowd or offer help,” said Inayath, a local resident. Another witness, Mahesh, added, “People were falling on top of each other. We had to form a human chain to help those on the ground.”
Unprepared Authorities, Devastated Families
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah admitted that the crowd size was vastly underestimated. “We expected a little more than the stadium capacity of 35,000, but nearly 2-3 lakh people turned up,” he said. The government has announced Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the victims’ families.
One of the youngest victims was 14-year-old Devyamshi, who had come to the celebration with her mother and siblings. Her grandmother, standing outside Bowring Hospital’s mortuary, said in tears, “I lost my granddaughter.”
Nation Reacts with Grief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, calling the tragedy “absolutely heartrending,” and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured.
Former Karnataka CM H.D. Kumaraswamy criticized the state government, holding them responsible for the incident. “This is a clear case of poor planning and lack of preventive measures. The Congress-led state government must take full responsibility,” he stated.
As investigations begin, questions loom large over the accountability and safety measures—or lack thereof—that failed to protect thousands of fans who had only gathered to celebrate a cricketing milestone.
