PM to Meet Trump in Washington; Trade and Gaza Crisis on the Agenda
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is en route to Washington D.C. for a high-stakes meeting with former US President Donald Trump, aimed at reversing newly imposed US tariffs on Israeli goods.
This urgent trip follows a 17% tariff hike by the United States on a wide range of Israeli exports including critical sectors like machinery and medical equipment. The abrupt policy shift has raised alarm bells in Tel Aviv, with Netanyahu calling the move a “serious challenge to Israel’s economy.”
“I hope that I will be able to help on this issue. That is the intention,” Netanyahu said before boarding his flight to the US. “I am the first foreign leader who will meet President Trump about this, which shows the special personal link, as well as the special ties between the US and Israel.”
The meeting is scheduled for Monday, according to Israeli officials. Trump reportedly extended the invitation during a phone call with Netanyahu on Thursday, after the Israeli PM voiced concern over the sudden economic blow.
This comes in contrast to Israel’s recent elimination of tariffs on US imports. Just last week, Israel officially made nearly all American goods duty-free, fulfilling its commitment under a 40-year-old Free Trade Agreement with the US.
Economic and Geopolitical Stakes
Officials from Israel’s Finance Ministry told Reuters that the tariff hike could have a significant negative impact on bilateral trade, potentially affecting Israeli businesses, employment, and economic growth.
In addition to trade issues, Netanyahu is also expected to discuss the ongoing Gaza crisis, including the fate of Israeli hostages still held captive over 18 months after a major conflict began in the region.
The meeting could have far-reaching implications—not only for Israeli-American trade—but also for broader Middle East diplomacy, especially amid renewed tensions in Gaza.
Netanyahu had been visiting Hungary before making a sudden detour to Washington. His swift diplomatic move reflects growing pressure at home, where business leaders have called for urgent intervention to protect Israeli exports.
