Massive Air and Naval Assault Authorized by President Trump
The United States launched a large-scale military operation against Houthi-controlled sites in Yemen on Saturday, targeting key military installations. The offensive, authorized by US President Donald Trump, aimed to eliminate missile defense systems, radars, and drone launch pads used by the Iranian-backed Houthis to disrupt Red Sea shipping routes.
The Houthi-controlled Health Ministry reported that the strikes killed 31 people, including women and children, and injured 101 others. The attacks were carried out overnight in multiple locations under Houthi control.
US Aims to Secure Global Shipping Routes
President Trump defended the military action, stating that it was essential to ensure the safety of global maritime trade.
“Our brave Warfighters are right now carrying out aerial attacks on the terrorists’ bases, leaders, and missile defenses to protect American shipping, air, and naval assets, and to restore Navigational Freedom,” Trump posted on social media. He also warned Iran against supporting the Houthis, stating that Tehran would be held “fully accountable” for the group’s actions.
Escalating Tensions and US Strategy
The operation marks a significant escalation in US military involvement in Yemen and signals a renewed effort to counter Iranian influence in the region. The offensive followed an attack by Houthi forces on a US Air Force F-16 jet and the claimed downing of an MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Red Sea.
US officials stated that restoring safe passage through one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes was a top priority. The Houthis have repeatedly used drones, missiles, and explosive-laden boats to target commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Houthis Vow Retaliation
Despite the strikes, Houthi leaders remained defiant. Nasruddin Amer, deputy head of the group’s media office, insisted they would retaliate.
“Sanaa will remain Gaza’s shield and support and will not abandon it no matter the challenges,” Amer wrote on social media.
The rebels recently declared their intent to target Israeli vessels in retaliation for Israel’s blockade on Gaza. However, no such attacks have been confirmed in recent days.
US Military Operations in the Region
The strikes were executed by fighter jets from the USS Harry S. Truman and other US aircraft stationed in the region. The Trump administration has been ramping up military action against Houthi strongholds, viewing them as a proxy force for Iran. Intelligence agencies continue to monitor Houthi underground facilities, which they use to manufacture and store weapons.
The Houthis had largely halted their attacks following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas earlier this year. However, the group has threatened military action if the US or its allies directly intervene in Yemen.
Conclusion
The latest US offensive against the Houthis marks a significant escalation in the conflict, with both sides signaling further military action. As tensions continue to rise, the impact on global shipping and regional stability remains uncertain.
