💬 Former US President Alleges “Total Violation” of Trade Deal; Warns of Escalation
In a sharply worded post on Truth Social, former US President Donald Trump accused China of “totally violating” a recent tariff agreement with the United States, reigniting tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump’s statement comes amid growing uncertainty as US-China trade negotiations appear to be stalling. “The very high tariffs I set made it virtually impossible for China to trade into the United States,” Trump wrote, claiming that the resulting economic disruption in China led to factory closures and even “civil unrest.”
Despite earlier attempts to ease economic tensions, Trump accused China of failing to honor the terms of a 90-day tariff truce. “The bad news is that China… HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US,” he added, ending the post by saying, “So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”
🔄 Background of the Trade Deal
The tariff truce originally saw the US reduce additional import duties from 145% to 30%, while China reciprocated by lowering its tariffs on US imports from 125% to 10%. Trump claimed this move helped stabilize China’s economy temporarily, stating:
“Everything quickly stabilised and China got back to business as usual. Everybody was happy! That is the good news!!!”
However, Trump offered no specific details about how China allegedly broke the agreement.
🗨️ US Officials Echo Concerns
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged on Fox News that trade negotiations with China are “a bit stalled,” though he remained hopeful that a direct conversation between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could break the deadlock.
Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that the Trump administration had been closely monitoring Chinese compliance—or noncompliance—with the deal.
The renewed friction signals a possible escalation in the ongoing trade war, which has already had significant global economic impacts.
