Ceasefire Talks Stall as IDF Plans New Operations; Hostage Families Express Alarm
Israel has begun recalling thousands of reserve soldiers as it prepares to intensify its military offensive in Gaza, according to an official announcement made on Saturday. The move comes amid a deadlock in ceasefire negotiations with Hamas, which have remained stalled for over two months.
The decision follows a strategic plan presented by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, who outlined efforts to escalate pressure on Hamas by expanding the area of operations within Palestinian territories. Israeli media reports that the plan includes evacuating civilians from northern and central Gaza — a tactic previously used during the campaign in southern Rafah.
Qatar Drawn into Diplomatic Crossfire
In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Qatar of duplicity, saying the Gulf state must “decide if it’s on the side of civilization or if it’s on the side of Hamas barbarism.” Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari responded, denouncing Netanyahu’s remarks as “inflammatory” and irresponsible.
Public Concern Over Hostages
Reports from Israel’s public broadcaster Kan 11 suggest that Netanyahu’s cabinet is expected to approve the military’s new plan by Sunday. However, the escalation strategy has sparked significant concern among families of the hostages still held in Gaza.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters issued an “urgent and heartfelt” plea to the Israeli government, warning that “any escalation in the fighting will put the hostages — both the living and the deceased — in immediate danger.” At least 59 Israelis remain captive in Gaza.
Rising Human Toll in Gaza
Over 50,000 people have reportedly died in Gaza since Israel launched its campaign in response to Hamas’s deadly October 2023 attack. The conflict, now in its seventh month, continues to destabilize the Middle East with no clear path to resolution in sight.
