India’s first entertainment-packed sports league for college students aims to transform campus athletics
Kerala is taking a groundbreaking step to revolutionize college sports by launching its first-ever College Sports League (CSL) in May 2025, drawing inspiration from American league formats. The state’s Sports Department, in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education, conceived the CSL to infuse Indian college campuses with the excitement of cheerleaders, the thrill of weekly matches, and the opportunities of sports marketing.
Officials first proposed the project at the International Sports Summit Kerala (ISSK), held in Thiruvananthapuram in 2024.
A Gamechanger in Indian Sports
Kerala’s Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman stated that CSL is more than just a sports event—it’s a cultural shift that will engage thousands of students across the state. “College campuses will be throbbing with sporting action throughout the season. The CSL will create visibility for athletes and provide financial opportunities through revenue generation,” he said.
CSL will feature football, basketball, volleyball, and kabaddi. Matches will follow a home and away format, mimicking the U.S. college sports system, and are scheduled to take place weekly in the afternoon to maximize student attendance and energy.
CSL’s Unique Format and Vision
According to Vishnuraj P, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, CSL offers student-athletes repeated exposure and opportunities to improve. “Unlike knockout university championships, CSL gives teams and individuals multiple chances to shine over weeks of competition. Even if a team loses its opening match, it still has the chance to bounce back.”
Importantly, he emphasized that CSL is “deeply rooted in competitive sports,” not a shortcut to academic grace marks.
The state has also formed the Sports Kerala Foundation (SKF)—a special purpose vehicle to ensure the smooth conduct of CSL—and aims to use the league to steer youth away from drug abuse and unhealthy lifestyles.
From Sports to Student Startups
The CSL isn’t just for athletes. Students from various academic streams—commerce, communication, engineering, and management—will have the opportunity to contribute through marketing, event management, branding, and merchandise development.
The state hopes to turn college sports into a self-sustaining business model. Each college will operate student-run sports councils, tasked with sourcing sponsors, selling merchandise, and promoting games on campus and social media. This could generate pocket money for students, boost alumni engagement, and lay the foundation for Kerala’s emerging sports economy.
If successful, an auction model—similar to professional leagues—could be introduced in future seasons to help players generate income.
District to State-Level Tournaments
The structure of the league is ambitious and inclusive:
- Cluster level matches kick off the season.
- District-level league games follow, supervised by district collectors.
- Champions from Kerala’s 14 districts will then move on to zonal competitions.
- The state finals will crown the CSL champions.
Funding and Future Prospects
The first season’s budget is ₹1.2 crore, shared equally between the Sports and Higher Education departments. However, CSL is not intended to be a government-funded initiative in the long run. The goal is to create a model that sustains itself through sponsorships, branding, and strategic partnerships.
“CSL is a long-term investment in youth and sports entrepreneurship,” said Sijin B.T., head of the Sports Management and Research Institute (SMRI) and a key member of the CSL technical committee. He noted that US college sports, despite no government support, generate more revenue than Kerala’s GDP.
Conclusion
With the launch of CSL, Kerala is not only fostering a sporting culture but also laying the groundwork for a sustainable sports-based economy. The league could very well serve as a blueprint for other Indian states looking to tap into the passion and potential of college athletes.
