Trinamool Congress MP Raises Query on NCRB Reports
The Union Home Ministry informed Parliament that data validation for the 2023 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report is in its “final stage.” The ministry responded to a query from Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose in the Rajya Sabha about the publication status of NCRB reports after 2022.
NCRB Data Collection and Publication Process
The ministry clarified that 89 data supply centers, including 36 States/Union Territories and 53 Metropolitan Cities with populations exceeding 10 lakhs, collect data for the NCRB reports. The government also confirmed that it has already published the 2022 NCRB report and is currently processing the 2023 report.
Highlighting the methodology used for crime data collection, the ministry explained that NCRB has been consistently publishing three major reports:
- Crime in India (CII)
- Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI)
- Prison Statistics India (PSI)
Digital Collection and Verification Process
The government stated that since NCRB reports collate data from a calendar year, the collection process only begins after the respective year concludes. The Bureau has developed a dedicated digital software application to collect data, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
The verification and validation process involves multiple levels of scrutiny at the district, state, and national levels, facilitated by built-in checks within the software application. The Home Ministry emphasized that the data submitted by States and Union Territories undergoes extensive verification to maintain credibility and accuracy.
Government’s Commitment to Transparency
The Union Home Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency in crime data reporting by ensuring thorough validation before publishing all reports. As the 2023 NCRB report nears completion, it is expected to provide crucial insights into crime trends, accidental deaths, and prison statistics across the country.
As Parliament awaits the release of the final report, this development underscores the importance of accurate crime data collection and its role in policy formulation and law enforcement strategies.
