The third individual remains missing, adding to the mystery and raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding their disappearances. The victims’ families have alleged foul play and demanded a thorough investigation.

Protests Erupt, Police Allegedly Use Excessive Force

On Sunday, as mourners gathered to demand justice and an official inquiry into the deaths, a shocking video emerged online purportedly showing a policeman kicking a woman protester. The video has since gone viral, sparking widespread condemnation from both the public and political leaders.

Political Leaders Condemn the Incident

Several political figures in Kashmir have strongly criticized the police officer’s conduct, describing it as an abuse of power.

  • Iltija Mufti, leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), condemned the officer’s actions, stating, “Shocking and unbecoming for a policeman to kick a woman only because she was peacefully protesting against the mysterious deaths in Devsar, Kulgam. This highhanded behavior creates a trust deficit, alienating people even further.” She also alleged that police prevented her from visiting Kulgam by locking the gates of her house.
  • Sajad Lone, president of the Peoples Conference, called the officer’s actions “utterly disdainful” and added, “Images of a police officer kicking the female relatives of two youths who died in Kulgam are disturbing. Those responsible for protecting the public should not act with such contempt.”
  • Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, National Conference leader and Member of Parliament, expressed deep concern over the rising number of human rights violations in Kashmir. The visuals of a police officer kicking the mourning women protesting for justice are disgraceful and inhumane.”

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Raises Issue

Legislators across party lines in the J&K Assembly discussed the incident on Monday and raised concerns over the excessive use of force by the police.

J&K Police Launch Inquiry

Following the widespread outrage, the Jammu and Kashmir Police announced that they have taken cognizance of the matter and launched an investigation into the officer’s conduct. The police have assured that DIG SKR will complete the inquiry within ten days.

A statement from J&K Police on Monday read: “A video has surfaced on social media regarding a police officer’s conduct with the public in Kulgam. “We have taken cognizance of the incident and will thoroughly investigate the allegations regarding the officer’s actions.”

Public Demands Justice and Transparency

As the police inquiry progresses, the families of the victims and the general public continue to demand accountability and transparency. The incident has reignited concerns over the treatment of civilians by law enforcement in the region, with many calling for strict action against the officer involved.
