Moscow witnessed its largest drone attack in months as Russian air defenses intercepted 73 Ukrainian drones targeting the capital early Tuesday morning. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the attack, stating that the city’s air defense systems successfully neutralized the incoming drones, preventing large-scale destruction.
One Dead, Three Injured in Moscow Region
While most drones were shot down before reaching central Moscow, at least 11 were intercepted in the Ramensky and Domodedovo districts. The attack caused damage to a residential building in Ramensky, affecting seven apartments. A parking lot in Domodedovo also saw multiple vehicles set ablaze. According to Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov, the assault resulted in one fatality and three injuries.
Flights and Train Services Disrupted
The Russian civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia imposed temporary restrictions on flights at four major Moscow airports—Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo—to ensure passenger safety. Additionally, train traffic at Domodedovo railway station was briefly halted due to security concerns.
Drone Attacks Extend Beyond Moscow
Authorities confirmed that drone attacks were not limited to Moscow. Drones were reportedly jammed or shot down in multiple regions, including Kaluga, Ryazan, Tula, Vladimir, and Belgorod, which borders Ukraine. In the Lipetsk region, one person sustained injuries in a drone strike, while flight restrictions were also imposed in Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod.
Ukraine Yet to Comment on the Attack
The attack coincided with a Ukrainian delegation’s meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Saudi Arabia, where discussions on ending the three-year conflict with Russia were expected. However, Ukrainian officials have not issued an official statement regarding the drone strikes.
Charred Buildings and Minor Damage in Moscow
Mayor Sobyanin downplayed the extent of the damage, calling it “insignificant.” However, footage released by Russian media outlets, including RIA Novosti, showed a charred section of a multi-story residential building near its rooftop, with portions of the building’s exterior lining stripped off.
As tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalate, the latest drone attack marks a significant escalation in aerial warfare, raising concerns about further retaliatory strikes and regional instability.
