Aadhaar-EPIC Linking: Election Commission to Meet Top Government Officers Next Week

India News India News

The Election Commission (EC) will hold a crucial meeting next week with top officials from the Union Home Ministry, Law Ministry, and Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to discuss linking Aadhaar with voters’ IDs, EC sources confirmed on Saturday.

Key Meeting on Aadhaar-EPIC Linking

The upcoming meeting will involve Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Legislative Department Secretary Rajiv Mani, and UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar. The Election Commission has scheduled the meeting for March 18 to address concerns regarding the linking process and its impact on electoral rolls.

Voluntary Linking and Electoral Reforms

In 2021, an amendment to the Representation of the People Act, 1951, enabled the voluntary linking of Aadhaar with the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC). The Election Commission launched the initiative to eliminate duplicate voter registrations and enhance the accuracy of electoral rolls. However, the EC has yet to complete the linking process, and the exercise remains voluntary rather than mandatory.

Trinamool Congress Raises Concerns

The meeting comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has flagged concerns over duplicate EPIC numbers among voters in West Bengal and other states. According to reports, some state chief electoral officers mistakenly issued EPIC numbers using incorrect alphanumeric series, leading to duplication.

In response, the EC has acknowledged the issue and assured electors that it will issue new EPIC numbers within three months. The commission clarified that duplicate EPIC numbers do not indicate fake voters, as only those registered in a particular constituency are eligible to vote.

Future of Aadhaar-EPIC Integration

The Election Commission remains committed to improving the voter registration process and ensuring transparency in electoral rolls. The upcoming meeting is expected to lay out a roadmap to address concerns and streamline the Aadhaar-EPIC linking process. With growing debates on digital identity verification and voter authentication, this discussion could shape future electoral policies in India.
