CBDT extends ITR filing deadline to September 15, 2025, due to changes in return forms and system readiness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has officially extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Financial Year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26). This extension comes as a relief to salaried individuals, professionals, and companies in India, following delays caused by significant changes in the notified ITR forms and the time required for system preparedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New ITR Filing Schedule Announced<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As per the latest government notification, the revised last date to file ITRs is now September 15, 2025<\/strong>, instead of the original deadline of July 31.The Income Tax Department delayed the ITR filing season, which traditionally begins on April 1 each year, due to the rollout of new and updated ITR utilities. The department now expects to launch the updated system in June 2025, officially starting the filing season.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belated Returns and Penalties<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Taxpayers who miss the new September 15 deadline will still have a chance to file their returns. However, these will be treated as belated returns<\/strong>, which can be submitted up to December 31, 2025<\/strong>. Filing belated returns incurs penalties and interest under Sections 234A, 234B, and 234F of the Income Tax Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CBDT cited \u201cextensive modifications\u201d in the ITR forms as the primary reason behind the delay. These changes aim to improve data transparency and reporting accuracy, ensuring smoother compliance and processing for both taxpayers and the tax department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
