Beijing calls for united front against US protectionism; New Delhi maintains diplomatic silence
New Delhi/Beijing, April 9: As the global trade environment grows increasingly volatile, a senior Chinese official has urged India and China to stand united against the rising pressure of US-imposed tariffs. The statement comes amid growing concerns over American trade policies under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Yu Jing, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, stated on X (formerly Twitter), “China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complementarity and mutual benefit. Facing the US abuse of tariffs … the two largest developing countries should stand together to overcome the difficulties.”
This rare public appeal from Beijing underscores China’s desire to find common ground with India as both nations face potential economic headwinds triggered by rising US protectionist policies.
China Reaffirms Its Position on US Tariffs
Earlier on Tuesday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce released a strongly worded statement criticizing the US’s move to escalate tariffs. Calling it “a mistake on top of a mistake,” the ministry accused the US of “blackmailing” and reaffirmed that China will never accept it and will fight to the end if necessary.
“Trade and tariff wars have no winners. All countries should uphold the principles of extensive consultation, practice true multilateralism, and jointly oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism,” the statement added.
India Keeps Low Profile, Opts for Dialogue
While China has taken a firm public stand, India has adopted a more cautious approach, with limited official communication so far. In the last 48 hours, India has issued only a brief statement noting that it is “examining” the US tariff decision.
Privately, however, government insiders suggest that New Delhi is leaning toward negotiations rather than retaliation, and ministries are working to calm fears across affected sectors.
The Bigger Picture: Asia’s Role in a Shifting Global Trade Order
The joint voices of India and China, both economic powerhouses in Asia, could be pivotal in challenging unilateral trade policies and shaping a more balanced international economic system. With the United States pushing aggressive tariff strategies, collaborative efforts among developing nations may become increasingly important in the months to come.
As trade tensions rise, all eyes will be on how India responds — whether through quiet diplomacy or by eventually aligning more openly with China on this issue.
