More than 7,000 Farmers Availing the Free Electricity Scheme
Etawah: In the district, a total of 9,177 private tubewell consumers are registered, out of which 7,026 consumers are benefiting from the government’s free electricity scheme. However, 2,151 consumers have yet to take advantage of this initiative. According to the data, 76.6% of tubewell owners are using free electricity to irrigate their fields, ensuring a healthy crop yield.
As per the government’s provisions, these tubewell users are entitled to 10 hours of free electricity daily. While no major issues regarding incorrect electricity bills have been reported so far, the Chief Minister has ordered a review of all such bills to ensure accuracy.
100% Electricity Bill Exemption Under Government Scheme
Since January 1, 2022, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government had initially offered a 50% discount on electricity bills for private tubewell owners. Later, in the 2023-24 budget, the government announced a 100% waiver on electricity bills for these farmers. The scheme officially came into effect on April 1, 2024.
To be eligible for the scheme, farmers were required to clear all pending electricity dues till 2023 before registering for the scheme. While 7,026 farmers have successfully registered, the remaining 2,151 farmers have yet to enroll, primarily due to outstanding electricity bills.
Government Encouraging More Farmers to Enroll
The electricity department is actively encouraging the remaining farmers to clear their pending dues and register for the scheme. Interestingly, no complaints have been filed by those who are already availing of free electricity. However, in line with the Chief Minister’s orders, the bills of registered consumers will also be reviewed to ensure complete transparency.
This initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to support farmers, providing them with free electricity for irrigation and reducing their financial burden.
