Thousands Demand Justice and Legal Reforms

Magura, Bangladesh: Widespread protests have erupted across Bangladesh after the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted. The child succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, sparking outrage and calls for swift justice and legal reforms to protect children.

Incident and Arrests

According to a case filed by the victim’s mother, the girl was raped while visiting her elder sister’s home in Magura on the night of March 5. The primary accused is her 18-year-old brother-in-law. His parents and brother have also been arrested in connection with the crime. All suspects are currently in police custody and under investigation.

Medical Report and Cause of Death

The government’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) department confirmed that the child suffered three cardiac arrests, which ultimately led to her death. She had been receiving critical care at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka since March 8 but could not be saved.

Public Outrage and Protests

Following the news of her death, mass protests erupted across the country. An enraged mob set fire to the house where the assault allegedly took place. The girl’s body was transported to Magura via an army helicopter, arriving at the local stadium at 6 pm amid intense protests. Thousands gathered for her funeral prayer (namaz-e-janaza) in Magura’s public square before she was buried at 7:30 pm.

In Dhaka, students from Dhaka University held an absentee funeral and marched in protest, demanding legal reforms and fast-track justice for rape victims. Many activists urged the government to enforce stricter laws to protect children from sexual violence.

Legal Actions and Investigation

Authorities have expedited the legal process. According to legal advisor Asif Nazrul, DNA samples have been collected and results are expected within five days. Statements from 12 to 13 individuals have been recorded, and the trial is expected to begin within a week. Nazrul emphasized that a swift trial could ensure timely justice for the victim and her family.

Government and Public Response

The government has assured the public of a thorough investigation and swift action against the culprits. Women and child rights organizations have also voiced their concern, urging immediate policy changes to prevent such incidents in the future.

The tragic case has intensified demands for legal reforms and strict enforcement of child protection laws in Bangladesh. Protesters continue to rally across major cities, calling for an end to violence against women and children.
