World News

Abu Khadija Eliminated in Security Operation

Iraq’s Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, announced on Friday that Abu Khadija, the leader of the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria, has been killed in an operation conducted by Iraqi security forces with support from the US-led coalition. The prime minister described him as one of the most dangerous terrorists in Iraq and the world.

A Major Blow to Islamic State

The elimination of Abdallah Makki Muslih al-Rufay’i, also known as Abu Khadija, is considered a significant victory in Iraq’s ongoing fight against Islamic State militants. The terrorist group had imposed strict Islamist rule over millions in Syria and Iraq for years and has been attempting to regain power in the Middle East, the West, and Asia.

Islamic State’s History of Terrorism

The Islamic State, at its peak in 2014, controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria, where its former leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared a caliphate. However, the group’s influence significantly weakened after Baghdadi’s death in a US raid in northwest Syria in 2019.

Islamic State’s Attempted Comeback

Despite its downfall, IS militants continue to launch attacks, with reports indicating 153 attacks in Iraq and Syria in the first half of 2024 alone. Intelligence assessments suggest that IS may be on track to more than double the number of attacks compared to the previous year, signaling an ongoing threat in the region.

Iraqi Government’s Counterterrorism Efforts

The Iraqi government, in collaboration with international partners, remains committed to eliminating the remnants of IS and preventing its resurgence. The killing of Abu Khadija marks another major milestone in the global fight against terrorism.
